The Ted Rogers Scholarship Fund rewards students for being good samaritans – not for having good grades. So basically, the creators of the program get it (and by “it” I mean life) because they know that your ability to calculate a slope, conjugate a verb, or locate a mitochondrion shouldn’t be life-defining criteria. In fact, programs like the Ted Rogers Scholarship Fund recognize the inherent value of community service and a solid work ethic. There are a few programs you should know about if you want to be eligible for the scholarship.

Here are some of the organizations you can involve yourself in to be eligible for a Ted Rogers Scholarship:

  1. Jays Care Foundation

If you’re passionate about helping Canadian children get involved with their favorite sports, the Jays Care Foundation may be a great place to start. Basically, the program seeks to close the opportunity gaps across Canadian communities so that every child, regardless of any physical, social or financial barriers, will have a fair chance to play. Consider getting involved with the Jays Care Foundation if you want to be eligible for a scholarship!

  1. Children’s Aid Foundation

The Children’s Aid Foundation of Canada is committed to the lives of children and youth in the child welfare system. Over 63,000 children and youth in Canada are struggling to navigate unsafe or challenging living conditions. The Children’s Aid Foundation works towards providing more support to children in need because “normal” shouldn’t mean that living on the streets is safer than living at home.

  1. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada

Many kids across Canada face ongoing social, physical, and mental disadvantages. Big Brothers and Sisters of Canada work towards fighting that. The program aims to recognize and foster children’s true potential through mentorship programs. If you believe that every child deserves an environment where they can find their true identity and make something for themselves, this organization might be something to consider!

  1. MLSE Foundation

The MLSE Foundation believes that all kids should have the opportunity to play sports, and deserve a chance to pursue their dreams of turning their athleticism into a career. Your support could help refurbish local athletic facilities, and help charities that help and motivate kids through sports-related programs.

  1. YMCA

The YMCA believes that physical health and fitness is essential to a happy and healthy life. They also focus much of their efforts on a variety of community initiatives such as supporting homeless shelters and participating in the fight against gender-based violence.

  1. Toronto Community Housing

Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) is the largest social housing provider in Canada and the second largest in North America. If you are interested in helping them provide subsidized housing to those most vulnerable, this may be an organization to get involved with to be eligible!

  1. True Patriot Love Foundation

The True Patriot Love Foundation is all about honouring the sacrifices made by the Canadian Armed Forces, Veterans and their families in both times of peace and conflict. If true patriotism is something that you are passionate about and motivated by, they could really use your support.

  1. Right to Play Canada

The Youth-to-Youth program at The Right to Play Canada focuses on play as an essential part of a child’s growth and development. Through games, sport, creative, and free play, the organization aims to teach children valuable lessons and learnings, while fostering their imagination. Outside of the classroom, they explore music and dance through performance, building their confidence and creative skills.

  1. Pflag

Pflag Canada is Canada’s only national organization that offers peer-to-peer support, committed to helping all Canadians navigate issues relating to sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression. As a community, they support, educate, and provide the necessary resources needed to overcome identity-related barriers. If the Pflag values are something that resonates with you, it’s definitely something to look into if you’d like to be eligible!

  1. Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada

Boys & Girls Clubs of Canada work endlessly to support children across Canada to develop their true potential while tackling relevant social issues. Some of the pillars their platform is based on including healthy and active living, learning and career development, leadership programs, parenting programs scholarships, and youth engagement.
