How to Apply
Applications are officially open for the 2021 Loran Award! The process takes place in September/October. Furthermore, shortlisted candidates are notified two weeks before their semi-final interview date. However, there are 2 ways to apply. Each has its own deadline period:
Sponsored Applications
Firstly, the school nominates students. Each Canadian high school may sponsor up to three students while Cegep can sponsor up to eight students. Therefore, if you are a high school student, you must contact your teacher, guidance counsellor, or school administrator for details regarding your school’s selection process. Similarly, if you are attending Cegep, explore the Loran Scholarship’s list of Cegep representatives in order to locate the right person to contact at your school.
Secondly, your school contact is required to fill out a short online sponsorship form prior to the deadline, which they will receive the link for once your application and reference letter are complete.
Thirdly, Loran Scholarship committees review these applications and invite shortlisted candidates (known as semi-finalists) to attend online interviews where they can connect with one another, gain interview experience, and meet local leaders.
Fourthly, when the semi-final interviews are finalized, the committee will invite outstanding semi-finalists to participate in national interviews before they announce the Loran Scholar(s).
Deadline for Sponsored Applications: October 15, 2020, before 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
Direct Pool Applications
Firstly, this application is without school sponsorship. Therefore, there is no limit to the number of direct pool applicants accepted from a particular school. These applications are reviewed by the Loran Scholarship committees (in their respective areas) before inviting shortlisted candidates to attend the online interviews.
Secondly, when the interviews are at an end, the committees invite outstanding semi-finalists to participate in national interviews. Please keep in mind that these committees can also grant territorial and provincial awards ($2,000 each) to semi-finalists who distinguish themselves.
However, they encourage students to seek sponsorship where possible.
Deadline for Direct Pool Applications: October 22, 2020, before 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
