Whether you’re in high school or already enrolled as a full or part-time student at college or university, there are government resources to help you pay for your tuition, living expenses, and more.

Canadians have access to a lot of student grants and loans. Here’s how you can find and apply to all the financial aid you need to pay for college and university.

Student Loans

The Government of Canada works with most provincial or territorial governments to offer student grants and loans. In all situations, you apply with your province or territory of residence. The amount you can receive is calculated when you apply.

These loans do not need to start being repaid until 6 months after you graduate or finish your studies. (Here are some tips on how to pay them back quickly.)

Student Grants

Grants do not need to be repaid and it’s possible that you’re eligible for more than one kind of grant.

The grant amounts you can receive depends on factors such as:

  • your province or territory of residence
  • your family income
  • if you have dependents
  • your tuition fees and living expenses
  • if you have a disability
