Auditory Learners

  • Saying words, phrases, key concepts in funny accents. For some reason, it tends to stick. (Posted by: Mystic93)
  • Saying it aloud really helps too. My friend records her voice on her iPod, and then plays it as she goes for runs. (Posted by: pamela13)
  • The best way to memorize is to record yourself reading your notes. Then listen to it wherever you go and before bed. (Posted by: vedaley)
  • If you’re having trouble remembering a vast content, try to put it in a way you will remember… If you’re musical, arrange it into a song. I always find it amazing how I am able to recall the lyrics of songs that I have not heard in years… (Posted by: almoraze)
  • It might sound funny but saying it to a tune until it’s stuck in your head usually works for me (Posted by: hannah.a.11)
  • I like using beats or melodies to help me memorize something. (Posted by: kwincabugao)
  • It might help to read aloud your notes to a younger sibling (then they ask you questions because they don’t understand, and you can answer them to help with memorization). (Posted by: anhnguyen)
  • Auditory learner? Read aloud or record yourself, maybe have a study buddy read the information to you. (Posted by: almoraze)
  • Explain to someone what you’re learning about, this way you can see how much you really know. (Posted by: nruke1)

Repetition

  • I say it a million times out loud until it sticks. (Posted by: BLauren)
  • Let’s say I have to memorize a list of 10 [items]:

I read 1 and say it to myself until it sticks

then 2 until it sticks

then 1 and 2

then 3

then 123

then 4

then1234

then 5

then 12345

then 6

then 123456 and so on (Posted by: safarhealthsci1)

Visual Learners

The following tips, originally posted at StudentAwards Conversations, were contributed by students in our membership.

  • I find it easier to memorize something if I make a quirky little acronym to help with the words. (Posted by: Bearie)
  • Usually, to memorize things, I write them out in a specific order. Since I am a visual learner, my brain memorizes the page as a picture. It comes in handy when trying to recall information on tests. I just think of what page it’s on and try to visualize where everything is. It also helps to read and re-read both quietly and out loud. If you write, read and hear the information you are most likely to remember it. Also, I find it helps to study with a person. When they quiz you and you mess up you might remember how they corrected you or the joke they made. (Posted by: mackness)
  • Post-it notes actually help a lot… to keep track of what’s most important… (Posted by: ashley99948)
  • I find it especially helpful to color code and the use of markers and a whiteboard can work wonders. (Posted by: DakotaJade)
