If you are completing your Adult Basic Education program and plan to enroll in full-time post-secondary studies, you may be eligible for a $5,000 Transition Award.

The Transition Award is available to Adult Basic Education students who:
- are Canadian citizens, permanent residents (landed immigrants), convention refugees, or protected persons living in Canada; and
- are residents of British Columbia, defined as having a primary residence in BC for at least 12 months prior to the date of application for the Award; and
- have clearly demonstrated meaningful volunteer and/or community service*
- can describe clear career/life and education goals.
- Have completed – or will be completing – a minimum of two Adult Basic Education (ABE)** courses at a BC public post-secondary institution in the coming academic year
- Are planning to enroll in full-time post-secondary studies at a BC public post-secondary institution in the coming academic year
*Applicants who can demonstrate family and/or employment obligations that limited volunteer and/or community service opportunities will be considered eligible.
** English as an Additional Language (EAL), English Language Learning (ELL), and English as a Second Language (ESL) courses do not qualify.
To apply,
- Create an account HERE (or login if you already have one). This is the Society’s secure online application portal (SMApply).
- Determine your eligibility by completing the eligibility assessment.
- If you are found to be eligible, you will automatically be connected to the application form. The information you enter onto the form will be saved as you work, and you may continue to edit the form until submitted.
- Provide name and email address for an “Academic Reference” or a “Community Service/Volunteer Reference” (The online application system will then send an email to this reference requesting that they complete and submit a reference on your behalf.)
- Watch for an email notification that your reference has been received so that you can SUBMIT your application for consideration. (You will need to login to your SMApply account again and click the SUBMIT button.)

Transition Awards are awarded on the basis clearly articulated life/education goals and demonstrated community activities and/or volunteer service.
- Students can apply in advance of receiving official acceptance from the post-secondary institution they plan to attend.
- Students with a break in studies of more than one year from the date of completing ABE courses are not eligible to apply for a Transition Award, except in extenuating circumstances (e.g., medical).
