The Beedie Luminaries mission is to give promising BC students the opportunity to advance their education, achieve their dreams, and inspire others.

Beedie Luminaries recognizes the need for support among young refugees and immigrants arriving in Canada. The Refugee & Immigrant Student Education (RISE) Awards have the potential to transform the lives of its recipients and enrich the communities we live in, and ultimately create a new generation of conscientious, caring and engaged Canadian leaders.

$44,000 per full-time student / $11,000 per year up to 4 years of funding

How to Apply

To be considered for the RISE program, an applicant must:

  • Be born between the years of 1989 and 2005;
  • Plan to be a full-time or part-time student and use funding for post secondary education;
  • Apply to, or be currently enrolled at, one of the eligible post-secondary institutions;
  • Be a refugee who was granted permanent residency or a protected person under subsection 95(2) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (Canada) after January 1, 2016, residing full-time in BC for the previous 6 consecutive months;
  • Demonstrate your and/or your family’s financial adversity, and how it has affected you;
  • Be endorsed by a community organization, teacher, employer, settlement worker or someone who knows you well.

 

 

Applicants can apply online for post-secondary education at all 25 public post-secondary institutions in British Columbia. See the complete list here.

 

Applications will be evaluated by the selection committee using the following key criteria:

  • Basic Eligibility
  • Personal circumstances;
  • Demonstration of financial adversity;
  • Applicant’s proven work ethic, grit and resilience in the face of adversity;
  • Clarity of the applicant’s educational goals, and focused commitment;
  • Career goals;
  • The reference letter.
