First-generation students are the first in their families to attend a college or university. The First Generation award was established to recognize and honor first-generation college students for their academic and leadership initiatives. Such leadership and ambition take courage, and NSHSS wants to award students for their positive efforts.

First generation high school seniors/Grade 12 students and post-secondary students in their first three years are eligible to apply.
- Prompt Response of 500-800 words to the following question:
- College can be challenging, from filling out financial aid to enrolling in classes, choosing a major, and making new friends. As a first generation college student, what challenges have you faced and how did you overcome them?
- Color headshot suitable for website posting
- Educator recommendation letter
- Academic resume
- Current Transcript (can be official or unofficial)
