  • Hold Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.
  • Be at least 16 years of age by September 1st of the following year.

Our application process takes place annually in September/October. Shortlisted candidates are notified at least two weeks before their semi-final interview date. There are two ways to apply for the Loran Award, with different deadlines.

Sponsored Applications

Deadline: October 15, 2020 (before 8:00PM Eastern Time)

A sponsored application is one that is nominated by the school.

Each Canadian high school may sponsor applications for up to three students, while each Cegep may sponsor up to eight students. Please contact your guidance counsellor, teacher or school administrator to learn about the sponsorship selection process at your school. If you are currently attending a Cegep, you can consult our list of Cegep representatives for the right person to contact at your school. Your school contact will need to complete a short online sponsorship form before the deadline, and they will receive the link to complete this form once your application and your reference letter are finalized.

Our committees review the sponsored applications in their respective areas and invite shortlisted candidates (semi-finalists) to attend online interviews. These interviews are an opportunity for semi-finalists to connect with one another, meet the local leaders who serve as our interviewers, and gain valuable interview experience.

After semi-final interviews, our committees invite outstanding semi-finalists to participate in national interviews. Our committees also grant provincial & territorial awards ($2,000 each) and honour citations to semi-finalists who distinguish themselves at the semi-final level.

Direct Pool Applications

Deadline: October 22, 2020 (before 8:00PM Eastern Time)

A direct pool application is one that is submitted without school sponsorship. There is no limit to the number of direct pool applicants from a single school.

Our committees review the direct pool applications in their respective areas and invite shortlisted candidates (semi-finalists) to attend online interviews. These interviews are an opportunity for semi-finalists to connect with one another, meet the leaders who serve as our interviewers, and gain valuable interview experience.

After semi-final interviews, our committees invite outstanding semi-finalists to participate in national interviews. Our committees also grant provincial & territorial awards ($2,000 each) and honour citations to semi-finalists who distinguish themselves at the semi-final level.

We encourage students to seek sponsorship, where possible. However, we continue to discover and select Loran Scholars through both application pools.

The deliberations of our selection committees, for both sponsored and direct pool applicants, are confidential. All decisions are final and not eligible for appeal.

Renewable for up to four years, with a total value of $100,000, each Loran Award includes:

  • An annual stipend of $10,000
  • A matching tuition waiver from one of 25 partner universities
  • Personal mentorship from a Canadian leader
  • Access to our network and up to $10,000 in funding for summer work experiences in three different sectors
  • An orientation expedition through Algonquin Park
  • Annual retreats and scholar gatherings

We also grant approximately 95 finalist and provincial awards to promising candidates who are not selected as Loran Scholars. Read more about our different awards.
